Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. Wavelengths between approximately 200 nm and 300 nm are strongly absorbed by the nucleic acids of viruses and bacteria — thereby permanently disrupting their DNA. Coronaviruses are a group of related RNA viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, these viruses cause respiratory tract infections ranging from mild to lethal — including the common cold, SARS, MERS and COVID-19.
