About Water Wash Paint Booths
Water wash spray booths are the original type of paint booth — predating the dry back booth. Autocoat Engineering has been manufacturing water wash spray booths since 1985, almost from the start when this technology was gaining popularity in India. The generic names can confuse — water wash spray booth, wet spray booth, water curtain booth, water screen booth — but the operating principle is the same: water captures and separates overspray paint from the exhaust air.
All parts and components used in Autocoat’s water wash spray booths are 100% Indian made. Selection is based on paint consumption per shift — either Autocoat Engineering Standard (AES models) for standard production volumes, or AES Special (custom-made) for non-standard sizes and higher volumes. For sampling work and very low paint consumption, the Lab Water Wash Booth — Autocoat’s smallest model — is recommended.
AES Standard vs AES Special — Which Model Do You Need?AES Standard models cover standard paint booth sizes for typical shift-based paint consumption volumes. Economical pricing with all production features.
AES Special (custom) models are designed for non-standard production volumes, oversized components, conveyorised applications or specialist paint types (plastic, ABS, furniture). Autocoat collects your production requirement details before quoting any AES Special model.
Key Features
✓Pumpless DesignHigh-pressure centrifugal blower replaces old tube axial fan + water pump setup — no pump to choke, no pump spares to stock, direct power saving.
✓Tornado-Effect Washing ChamberHigh-pressure centrifugal blowers create tornado effect — cyclic water action makes paint heavy and deposits pigments in the water tank.
✓3 Rows of EliminatorsPlaced in the washing chamber to maximise paint deposition on eliminator plates before exhaust air leaves the extraction zone.
✓Paint Sludge Removal SystemRemoves 1–2 kg of paint sludge every 10–15 minutes in conveyorised applications — incorporated only in water wash booths.
✓Quick Fill & Make-Up WaterAutomatic water level maintenance — compensates for evaporation during continuous use so the painter never needs to monitor water levels manually.
✓Water Curtain OptionFor plastic, ABS and furniture paint lines where static-tendency paint dust sticks on vertical walls — water curtain on the front face ensures quick discharge of sticky dust into the water tank.
✓Bolted & Punched Construction100% Indian-made components. Punched holes and bolted fabrication — allows easy assembly, dismantle and re-assembly if booth location needs to change.
✓Factory Tested Before DispatchActual blower testing in Autocoat’s factory before any booth is dispatched — guaranteed performance at the customer’s premises.
How the Washing Chamber Works
The water wash booth’s washing chamber is where the separation of paint from air happens. Air carrying overspray paint particles is drawn through floor grating (downdraft) or through the front face (side-draft) into the washing chamber. High-pressure centrifugal blowers create a tornado effect — the cyclic action of water on paint makes the paint particles heavy and deposits the paint pigments in the water at the bottom of the tank.
Autocoat provides special booth powder for the water tank which increases the density of waste spray and takes it to the bottom of the paint tank. Three rows of eliminators in the washing chamber ensure maximum paint gets deposited on the eliminator plates before exhaust air leaves the extraction zone. Since there is no filter in the water wash booth, choking does not happen quickly — maintenance periods are considerably longer than with dry booths.
For conveyorised spray painting lines, the water wash booth can be connected to a paint sludge removal system capable of removing 1 to 2 kg of sludge every 10 to 15 minutes — significantly reducing the hassle of removing waste paint sludge in high-volume production.
Pumpless Design — High Efficiency, Power Saving & Low Maintenance
Autocoat’s water spray booths are pumpless type in nature. The old design used a tube axial fan and a water pump to supply water to the water screen. This method is now fully outdated — the pump chokes frequently, reducing booth efficiency and becoming a recurring maintenance problem.
Autocoat’s pumpless design uses a high-pressure centrifugal blower instead. Centrifugal suction generates powerful velocity in the booth without a pump — eliminating pump choking, reducing spare parts inventory (no pump, no valves), and achieving direct power savings proportionate to the pump’s kilowatt rating. Unlike competitors who still use tube axial blowers that produce poor suction velocities, Autocoat’s centrifugal blower design delivers consistently higher performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Water Wash Paint Booth? +
A Water Wash Paint Booth uses continuously circulating water to capture and collect overspray. The air-paint mixture passes through a washing chamber where high-pressure centrifugal blowers create a tornado effect — the cyclic action of water on paint makes it heavy and deposits paint pigments in the water. Three rows of eliminators in the washing chamber ensure maximum paint capture. A paint sludge removal system connected to the booth can remove 1–2 kg of sludge every 10–15 minutes. Water can be reused repeatedly with the addition of Autocoat’s special booth powder, which increases waste spray density and deposits it at the bottom of the paint tank.
What are the advantages of a Water Wash Booth over a Dry Back Booth? +
Water Wash Paint Booths are virtually maintenance-free — there are no filters to replace and no filter stocks to maintain. Since there is no filter, choking does not happen quickly — maintenance periods are longer than with dry booths. Water wash booths are ideal for high-volume and mass production painting, and for sticky paints like furniture coatings, ABS plastics and furniture paints that would clog dry filters. Water can be reused with a paint sludge removal system. A water curtain option can be added for extra discharge of sticky paint dust into the water tank — particularly useful for plastic painting lines and furniture painting.
What is a Pumpless Water Wash Booth? +
Autocoat’s pumpless design removes the water pump previously used to supply water to the water screen. The old pump-based design used a tube axial fan and a water pump — the pump frequently choked, reducing booth efficiency. Autocoat’s pumpless design uses a high-pressure centrifugal blower instead, which creates powerful suction velocity directly without a pump. This delivers superior performance, lower maintenance (no pump or valves to maintain), reduces spare parts inventory, and achieves direct power savings proportionate to the pump’s kilowatt rating.
What are the AES Standard and AES Special model ranges? +
Autocoat Engineering Standard (AES) models are the production range of Water Wash Paint Booths — designed for standard paint consumptions per shift, economical pricing, with all production features. AES Special models are custom-made booths for non-standard production volumes, oversized components, conveyorised applications or specialist paint types. For sampling work and very low paint consumption, the Lab Water Wash Booth (Autocoat’s smallest AES model) is recommended.
