Pumps & Industry Overview

A pump is a device that moves fluids — liquids, gases or sludge — by mechanical action. This mechanical action can be reciprocating or rotary motion, and consumes energy to perform mechanical work moving the fluid. There are many different types of pumps available in the market, and the paint applied over the pump also depends on the type of application.

The application mainly includes the type of fluid to be pumped, the distance the fluid is to be moved, and the quantity required over a particular time frame. However, it can be complicated to accurately identify what kind of pump must be selected — identification of the pump can be done through its design as well as its position.

Autocoat Engineering has a long experience and expertise in supplying paint shops for electric motors and pumps. We wish to introduce our company in the field of manufacturing of Spray Booths for Pumps for painting pumps in the right way. For any painting line, process development is very important — once the process is set, quality improvement can easily be achieved.

Pump Painting Process & Surface Preparation

The paint applied to pump components must have excellent resistance to various chemicals, moisture and salts in the atmosphere. Before any paint film is applied, surface preparation is a must. Pumps have multiple components — cast iron, EN8, shafts, stainless steel — and each part needs to be treated separately due to its metallurgic properties. Some components like shafts are to be kept with unpainted surfaces so that they do not lose their mechanical properties.

Surfaces That Do Not Require Protective Coating

Certain pump component surfaces must remain unpainted to retain their functional and mechanical properties. These include: Anodized Aluminium Grounding Pads, Brass Machined Surfaces, Bronze, Motor Leads, Chromium Plated Metals, Porcelain Enamel Finishes, Copper, Rubber, Galvanized Steel, Stainless Steel, and Glass. Identifying these unpainted areas correctly before painting is a critical step in any pump painting process.

Four Stages of Pump Painting

Autocoat’s pump paint booth process follows a structured four-stage workflow to ensure maximum paint adhesion, long-lasting protection and a professional finish on all pump components:

1 Pre-treatment of Pump Casting
Cleaning and pre-treatment of cast surfaces is the most important stage. As soon as castings are checked and approved for further process, pre-treatment is carried out by a minimum 7-tank or 10-tank process. For pumps used in corrosive or outdoor applications, a 7-stage zinc phosphating is recommended. This process can also be carried out by the Shot Blasting Method. Once a phosphate coat is applied, the pump casting is transferred to the pump paint booth.
2 Primer / Red Oxide Coat
Small pump castings are placed over a jig so that multiple castings can be painted with primer or red oxide in the pump paint booth at the same time. With jigs in use and the right spray guns, the desired paint film thickness in microns is achieved. Larger and heavier pump castings are painted singularly with appropriate material handling. Selection of the right paint booth ensures undesired overspray is removed, creating a smooth finish over the cast.
3 Mid Primer Coat After Assembly
At assembly and water testing stages, pump primer surfaces often develop grease and oil marks. At the water testing stage there is also a chance of percolation of water into pump cavities. These marks must be removed thoroughly with cleaners, and a mid primer coat is applied again in the pump spray booth. An air blowing facility is also recommended to remove trapped water before the mid coat is applied to avoid paint film defects.
4 Final Finish Colour Coat
After the mid primer stage, the assembled pumps are either dried on a conveyor for pump painting / drying or by a batch process, or directly by a wet-on-wet process. The finish paint is applied by two methods: Conveyorised Pump Painting for smaller pumps, and Paint Booth for Pumps with material handling equipment for large frame-size pumps. Conveyorised pump painting is very fast and economical.

Conveyorised Pump Painting & Material Handling

Autocoat has supplied many pump paint booths as well as conveyorised pump painting lines, which are running almost on a 3-shift basis trouble-free. We have designed, developed and manufactured Slat Conveyor systems for heavy assembled pump painting. Conveyorised pump painting is very fast and economical, making it the preferred choice for high-volume pump manufacturers.

Autocoat has also developed industrial pump painting with monorail handling equipment for heavy pumps (centrifugal pumps) with a heavy-duty slat conveyor for transit. This method enhances the capability of the painter to lift, lower and also rotate the heavy pumps during painting. Our Pump Spray Booths are very efficient and match the Pollution Board norms.

Training & Productivity Support

Training sessions are conducted by Autocoat to educate painters and subordinates to get maximum productivity and effective maintenance from their pump painting lines. Our engineers visit client sites to ensure optimal booth performance, correct spray gun selection, and proper paint film thickness measurement — helping pump manufacturers achieve consistent, high-quality finishes every shift.
