UV Radiation & UVC
Sterilization Technology

Radiation is the emission of energy from any source. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun and man-made sources like high-voltage lights, welding torches and microwaves. Autocoat Engineering leverages proven UVC technology in its Auto Disinfectant UV Box, UV Tower and UVC Conveyor — laboratory tested for safe, effective, chemical-free sterilization since 1985, based in Thane, Maharashtra.

About UV Radiation

All radiation is a form of energy, most of which is invisible to the human eye. UV radiation is only one form of radiation and it is measured on a scientific scale. All of us are exposed to radiation every day — from natural sources such as minerals in the ground, and man-made sources such as medical X-rays. According to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the average annual radiation dose per person is 6.2 millisieverts (620 millirem).

All EM radiation (also called EM energy) is made up of minute packets of energy or ‘particles’ called photons, which travel in a wave-like pattern and move at the speed of light. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has wavelengths from 10 nm (approximately 30 PHz) to 400 nm (750 THz) — shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays.

Our regularly used known radiations: Radio waves transmit sound from a radio station’s tower to a stereo, from a mobile tower to cell phones, via WiFi to phones and TVs, and via Bluetooth to music systems and devices.

Microwaves have higher energies — part of the incident energy is reflected from the surface of the material, and only a portion of the penetrating energy is absorbed. Infrared waves are used in heat-sensitive thermal imaging cameras to study human and animal body heat patterns, night-vision cameras, remote controls and fibre optic cables.

Types of UV Radiation

Sunlight is the main source of UV radiation. The UV region covers the wavelength range 100–400 nm, which produces three main types of UV rays:

☀ UVA — Long Wave
  • Wavelength range: 315–400 nm
  • Penetrates the middle layer of skin
  • Larger percentage reaches Earth’s surface
  • Greater long-term threat to skin
🔆 UVB — Medium Wave
  • Wavelength range: 290–315 nm
  • Causes sunburns with prolonged exposure
  • Increases risk of skin cancer
  • ~95% absorbed by Earth’s ozone layer
⚡ UVC — Short Wave
  • Wavelength range: 100–290 nm
  • Extremely harmful — absorbed by atmosphere
  • Destroys nucleic acids of microorganisms
  • Proven disinfectant for food, air and water
Why UVC Works for Sterilization

UVC ultra violet radiation, when used in the right manner, works very well as a disinfectant for food, air and water — killing microorganisms by destroying their cells’ nucleic acids (DNA/RNA). This prevents them from replicating and causes cell death. Unlike chemical sterilization, UVC leaves no residue, requires no water and works in seconds to minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UV Radiation? +
UV radiation (Ultraviolet radiation) is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm — shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. It comes from the sun and man-made sources like high-voltage lights, welding torches and microwaves. UV radiation is classified into three types: UVA (315–400 nm), UVB (290–315 nm) and UVC (100–290 nm). All UV radiation travels as photons at the speed of light in a wave-like pattern.
What is the difference between UVA, UVB and UVC radiation? +
UVA (315–400 nm) rays have the longest wavelength, penetrate the middle layer of skin and reach Earth’s surface in large proportions — representing a long-term skin threat. UVB (290–315 nm) rays cause sunburns and increase skin cancer risk with prolonged exposure; about 95% is absorbed by the ozone layer. UVC (100–290 nm) rays are extremely harmful and almost completely absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere. When generated by man-made lamps and used correctly, UVC destroys the DNA and RNA of microorganisms — making it the only UV type used for sterilization.
How does Autocoat’s UV Box sterilize items? +
The Autocoat Auto Disinfectant UV Box uses high-intensity UVC lamps positioned for maximum coverage inside the box. When the lid is closed, UVC radiation irradiates the items placed inside, destroying the nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms — preventing replication and causing cell death. Most items — fruits, masks, mobile phones, courier boxes — are fully sterilized in just 2–3 minutes. No water or chemicals are required. The system operates on a completely dry model.
Is the Autocoat UV Box safe for users? +
Yes. The Autocoat Auto Disinfectant UV Box incorporates a built-in safety interlock mechanism — the UVC lamps will not operate unless the lid of the box is properly closed. This ensures the user is never exposed to UVC radiation at any time during operation. The variable time chart and designated timing options further simplify safe operation. The product has been laboratory tested and is designed for safe daily home and commercial use.
What items can be sterilized in the Autocoat UV Box? +
The Autocoat Auto Disinfectant UV Box has been laboratory tested on a wide range of everyday items including fruits, face masks, courier and delivery boxes, mobile phones and other daily-use objects. All tested samples showed sterilization efficiency of almost 99%. The dry working model means it is safe for items that cannot be washed or chemically treated.
